Locus Description: This gene encodes a member of a family of candidate taste receptors that are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. The TAS2R genes, with a size range of 876 -1,014 bp, have intronless coding regions and code for G protein coupled receptors. TAS2R16, is present in taste receptor cells on the tongue and is activated by bitter beta-glucopyranosides. A number of coding SNPs (cSNPs) have been identified in human bitter-taste receptor genes. This gene is located on 7q in a region reported to exhibit linkage with alcohol dependence. Hinrichs et al. (2006) found that a cSNP,K172N, in the TAS2R16 gene shows significant association with alcohol dependence.
