Population Description: Catalonia is a historic region encompassing the northeast corner of the Iberian Peninsula as well as the French department of the Pyrenees- Orientales. The current population (est. 2000) of that area is about 6,500,000; although, roughly one-half are recent immigrants from other regions in Spain. Catalan ethnic identity originated in the Early Middle Ages, when Christian kingdoms originated along the northern rim of the Iberian Peninsula after the Arab invasion. Catalonia was the main force in the medieval Kingdom of Aragon. The Catalan language is a romance language spoken in Catalonia, Andorra, a narrow strip in eastern Aragon, Valencia, the Roussillon region of France, the Balearic Isles and the Sardinian town of Alghero (l'Alguer); these territories are collectively known as the Catalan countries.
