Males were subject to an interview in order to ascertain about their ethnic origins and to give their informed consent. Individuals belong to the following ethnic groups: Bijagos (from the Bijagos Archipelago), Balanta, Felupe (known as Diola or Djola), Mancanha, Manjaco, Pepeis, Banhu, Beafadas, Nalu, Fula (known as Peul or Fulbe), Mansonca, Sussa and Mandinga (known as Mandenka).
