Population Description: Nigeria is located in western Africa and shares its borders with Chad, Cameroon, Benin, and Niger along with the Gulf of Guinea to the south. In the early twentieth century Nigeria was a British colony that became an independent nation in 1960. Since this time, the country has struggled with the transition from military to civilian rule with several violent outbreaks.

The peopling of the Nigerian region has a long history beginning with the Fok who inhabited the area between 300 B.C. and 200A.D. Nigeria is now the most populous and the most diverse country in Africa. It has more than 250 ethnic groups with the dominant groups being the Hausa in the north, the Nupe and the Tiv in the middle belt, the Yoruba in the southwest and the Igbo in the southeast. Although English is the official language the number of languages spoken in Nigeria is estimated to be over 250. Several religions exist in Nigeria with Islam dominating in the north, Christianity in the east and indigenous beliefs in the west.
