Population Description: The Wayana-Aparai Indians, from Amapa, Brazil, are a combination of two separate tribes that fused together due to intermarriage and their proximate location. Both of these groups are speakers of the Carib linguistic group. According to the Ethnologue the total population of the Wayana was 750 in 1980 and 450 Aparai in 1993. The Wayana-Aparai were first contacted in the early to mid 18th century. This group's economy is agriculturally based and recently they have also been able to make money by selling their artwork. They are most famous for their masks and baskets. The most important ritual ceremonies for this group is the initiation ceremonies for girls and boys entering adulthood.
