Population Description: The Wayuu (Guajiro), an indigenous tribe of approximately 305,000 (1995 Ethnologue), live in the desert area of northeast Columbia and Venezualia in the Guajira Peninsula on the Caribbean coast. (the northernmost point in South America). This group lives by raising sheep, farming, and hunting. Due to fact that they live in the desert the Wayuu are susceptible to extreme environmental circumstances.

Sample Name: Wayúu

Sample UID: SA004076R

Sample Description:These sample consists of individuals from Wayúu Amerindian population. This sample is of unrelated individuals. The assignation of this population was with a genealogical criterion of 3 generations earlier belonged to the community. The sampling was carried out at hospitals in the munipalities of Riohacha, Maicao and Uribia and in some Wayúu villages (Rancherias). Wayúu lives in La Guajira peninsula (10°23' and 12°28' north latitude, 71°06' and 73°39' W) in the northern of Colombia. Their language is called Wayuunaiki; part of the Arawak language family. This sample was collected by Grupo de Genética de Poblaciones e Identificación-Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Number of Chromosomes: 244
