Population Description: The Zoro tribe is from the lowland region of the Amazon basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil. They are speakers of a Tupi-Monde language who populated 252 persons in 1995 (Ethnologue, 1995). The tribe was first contacted by the outside world in 1977 (Fleming-Morgan, 1991). It was at this time that the Zoro converted to Christianity. Since that time they have moved to the Gaviao village, have undergone dramatic population reductions due to epidemics, and have been under the constant threat of deforestation. Their system of horticulture is based on the cultivation of manioc, maize, and yams. The Zoro tribe is related to the Surui a group from Rondonia, Brazil. Both groups are located in the Aripuana Park, a reservation for these Amerindian groups.
