Locus Description: The protein encoded by this gene is the alpha component of fibrinogen, a blood-borne glycoprotein comprised of three pairs of nonidentical polypeptide chains. FGA consists of six exons and 5 introns, with an untranslated region of approximately 1Kb on the 3' end (Fu et al., 1992). Fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form fibrin, important in the clotting of blood and the products of which regulate cell adhesion and spreading, display vasoconstrictor and chemotactic activities, and are mitogens for several cell types including fibroblasts, endothelial and smooth muscle cells (Herrick et al., 1999).

FGA includes one of the 13 CODIS Core STR markers (SI000529Q).
