Locus Description: This tumor suppressor gene is a member of a nuclear histone/protein methyltransferase superfamily. The retinoblastoma protein is a target of viral oncoproteins. This gene was mapped to 1p36 by fluorescence in situ hybridization ( Buyse et al. ( 1996 ) . Although the functions of this protein have not been fully characterized, it may play a role in transcriptional regulation during neuronal differentiation and pathogenesis of retinoblastoma , act as a transcriptional activator of the heme-oxygenase-1 gene, and be a specific effector of estrogen action. RIZ has a potential role in the multistep tumor-forming process of malignant melanoma of the skin.( PMID: 12082534 )
