Population Description: Russians are the dominant ethnic group of the Russian Federation. They make up 81.5% of the country's population, approximately 145,000,000 people. Russians have endured several periods of foreign rule during the medieval period, first under the Scandinavian "Rus" and then under the Mongols. Therefore, although the population is primarily of Slavic descent both the Rus and the Mongols were somewhat assimilated into the larger Russian population. Russian and Soviet expansion led to the establishment of sizeable Russian populations throughout Northern Eurasia; many of the newly independent republics of the former Soviet Union have large Russian minorities. The Russian language is part of the Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family.
