Population Description: The Thoti inhabit many districts of Andhra Pradesh, India. This endogenous tribal group speaks and writes in Telugu, a Dravidian language. Their caste, panchayat, is led by the pinapedda and two elders. The traditional occupation of the Thoti was to serve the village community. They are currently mostly employed in town and government buildings as sweepers; they also make appropriate preparations for cremations. The Thoti are Hindu; however, they do eat beef. They observe pollution rituals during birth and death. Marriages are arranged and typically the Thoti live in a nuclear family.
