Population Description: The Gaviao, a Tupi-Monde group, live in the State of Rondonia, Brazil. They are distributed in two villages in the Igarape Lourdes Indian area, however many have homes in both villages (Bevilaqua LR, 1995). They have a population of 220 persons (Ethnologue, 1986). This group was contacted in the early 1940s and are relatively acculturated compared to their neighbors to the west, the Zoro (who were first contacted in 1976) (Santos RV, 1991). Since their contact there has been a marked decline in their population size, due to widespread epidemics. In fact, in the 1960s it was thought that it would be impossible for this groups to survive. The Gaviao show little interethnic admixture with the other Tupi-Monde groups- the Zoro and Surui. The Gaviao have become involved in the collection of natural rubber (Salzano, 1998). It is important to note that this group should not be confuse with another group that goes by the same name living in southeast Para (Gaviano-Parkateje) ) or Maranhao (Gaviano-Pukobye) (Bevilaqua LR, 1995).
