Population Description: The Huilliche indigenous group (Velches, Huilliche) or "People of the South" is a geographical categorization of people who used to be part of the Mapuche Nation who now live between the Tolten River and the Chacoa Channel in the Monte Verde forests of the Nahuel Huapi National Park in the southeastern portion of Chile. This group's economy is primarily based on agriculture, fruits, and tending cattle. The Huilliche language is part of the Araucanian linguistic family. However, according to the Ethnologue, the Huilliche language is more often used as a second language amongst family and friends in ceremonies; Spanish, an Indo-European language, is now, more-often used as the primary language. As of 1982 there were "several thousand speakers" of the Huilliche language (Ethnologue, 1982 SIL R. Croese). One of the main obstacles that the Huilliche have faced since the 1900s, is the exploitation of forests and water resources in the areas where they live.
