Sample Description:

This sample consists of individuals belonging to São Pedro, an African-derived community located in the Ribeira River Valley in the southern part of São Paulo State, Brazil. This community has a total of 132 inhabitants. Informed consent was obtained from all participants.

Before the abolition of slavery in Brazil (1888), many communities (quilombos) were founded by fled or abandoned African slaves. It is estimated that there are at least 700 such communities within Brazilian territory. These communities can be regarded as relics of the original African contribution to the Brazilian population.
