Population Description: The Uyghur¿s are an ethnic group primarily located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. There are over 8 million individuals belonging to this group, in China and surrounding regions. The Uyghur is one of China¿s largest ethnic groups.

The Uyghur have a long history in the region and have had a lasting impact on culture and tradition. They were originally a nomadic Turkish people in North and Northwest China. Although they were originally nomadic, they have been farmers for centuries. The majority of the Uyghur practice oasis agriculture. Their crops include wheat, maize, paddy rice and cotton; with cotton being a large part of the local economy. Although originally Buddhist¿s, the Uyghur were converted to Islam in the 10th century. The Uyghur language is a Turkic language very similar to Turkish.

The Uyghurs are Turkic speakers, a language belonging to the Altaic language family. This sample was obtained anonymously through local physicians and with consent of the participants.
