Population Description: Japan was first settled perhaps 30,000 years ago by hunter-gatherers who reached the islands via land bridges from Asia. Around 12,000 years ago, this population gave rise to the Jomon culture, a group of sedentary, ceramic-using village dwellers who hunted, fished, and practiced rudimentary agriculture. In the third century BC the Jomon were replaced by the Yayoi, metal-using rice farmers from the Asian mainland. The exact nature of this replacement is a subject of debate, but it is the Yayoi who may be the ancestors of the modern Japanese. Modern Japanese culture has been heavily influenced by China and Korea, but there do not appear to have been additional invasions or large-scale population replacements after the Yayoi period. Japanese, spoken by more than 99% of Japan's roughly 125,000,000 inhabitants, is considered by some linguists to be a language isolate, not closely related to any other languages. Others place it in the Altaic language family along with Turkish, Mongolian, and Korean.
