Population Description: The Yakuts are an ethnic group of Russia's extreme northeast. They call themselves the Sakha. The first contact between Russians and Yakuts occurred in the 1600s when Russia founded a fort in Yakut territory that would become the city of Yakutsk. The Yakuts were nomads who based their lives around horse- and cattle-raising, a traditional form of life that remains important at the present. They are thought to have originated further south in the Lake Baikal region, moving into their present territory during the 13th and 14th centuries. The Yakut language, currently spoken by over 350,000 people, is part of the Turkic branch of the Altaic language family.
