Population Description: Nasioi is one of three East Papuan language groups spoken on Bougainville, a large island to the east of New Guinea with a population of 160,000, of which about 20,000 speak a Nasioi dialect. The island is divided between East Papuan-speaking Melanesians in the south and center and Austronesian-speaking groups in the north and on the coasts. The Melanesians, who are linguistically related to other groups in eastern New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, are thought to have reached Bougainville 20-30,000 years ago, while the Austronesians seem to have arrived roughly 3,000 years ago.
