Population Description: Korea is not only the most ethnically homogeneous country in the world but it is also the most densely populated country with a population of 47,904,370 (2001 estimate). Koreans, like many other Asian peoples, are descendants of Mongolian Tungus stock. The Korean people can trace their origins to the founding of the state of Choson. This state developed on the banks of the Taedong River in the northwestern corner of the Peninsula. The civilizaion that prospered from Choson who posessed both a code of laws and a bronze culture. The majority of the modern population now lives in the southern and western coastal areas. Both Christian or Buddhism co-dominate the religion practiced throughout the country, however the ideas of Confucianism remain the underlying ethical structure for most modern Koreans.

After the Second World War ended, while North Korea was installing their communist government, South Korea was developing a republic. The Korean War took place from 1950 to 1953. United Nations forces assisted South Korea against North Korean attacks, which were supported by China. In 1953, a treaty was signed splitting the peninsula at the 38th parallel. Around 4 million immigrants crossed the border to South Korea after the establishment of North Korea. Since the 1960s, there has been a substantial movement to a more urbanized environment from a traditionally rural lifestyle.
