Population Description: There are approximately 18 million Ibo (Igbo) people (1995 est.) in southeastern Nigeria. Like other peoples of southern Nigeria, the Ibo are traditionally farmers. They have inhabited their current location (which is only 100 mile south of their ancestral homeland) for about 4-5000 years. Igbo, one of Nigeria's official languages, is part of the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo language family. The language itself is said to be very difficult language. This is due to the fact that it is very rich with over 30 dialectical variations. The traditional Ibo society is patrilineal. It is also a society that was traditionally made of deeply religious people who believed in many gods. However now, the overwhelming majority of the population is Christian. The traditional Ibo society is decentralized, focused only around small villages that are loosely governed by councils of elders. Large extended families typically govern themselves.

Sample Name: Ibo

Sample UID: SA003176R

Sample Description:This sample consists of Ibo individuals. The study was carried out according to the Declaration of Helsinki (2000)of the World Medical Association. Informed consent was obtained from all individuals. Ethnicity was assigned based on the submission that parents and grandparents of the volunteers were of the same self-identified ethnic group. The DNA of these samples are stored in the AiBST Biobank of African Populations.

Number of Chromosomes: 40
