Sample Name: Asiatic Indians, South Africa

Sample Description:Asiatic Indian sample from Indians in South Africa. Collected by T. Jenkins and H. Soodyall (University of the Witwatersrand). There are over 1,000,000 Indians in South Africa (2.6% of the country's population). The ancestors of this population were imported as slaves from the Dutch East Indian Empire by the Dutch Cape Colony from 1652 to the early 1800s. In 1806, Britain took over the colony and outlawed slavery in 1834. However, over 150,000 more Indians (mostly from the Utter Pradesh and Bihar regions) came to South Africa (particularly to Durban in Natal) after being recruited as indentured servants from 1860 to 1911. In 1875, reforms were made to improve the rights of indentured servants, which encouraged many to permanently settle there. However, the colony's white population, worrying about the influx of Indians to the community not only passed the 1891 Immigration Act which banned land grants to indentured servants but also imposed extra taxes on former and present indentured servants and their families in 1895. In 1904, Indians outnumbered the whites population in Natal. Therefore, indentured labor was outlawed in 1911 and in 1914 the South African government offered free passage to Indians returning to India. Despite later acts to limit the Indian community size, the Indian population in Natal continued to grow. In 1950, the South African government passed a Group Areas Act that enforced segregation and forced thousands of Indians to relocate. Between 1920 and 1950, political solidarity increased between the Indian and African community; many Indians participated in the apartheid movement. During the 1960s and 1970s however, Indians were given limited rights in to participate in the government whereas these rights were prohibited to blacks. These successes in the Indian community have created tensions amongst Blacks and Indians of South Africa in the post-apartheid years.

Sample Description:This sample consists of Indians who were randomly chosen from subjects enrolled in the SGVP (Singapore Genome Variation Project) who were recruited for an interpopulation study on the genetic variability to drug response. Population membership was ascertained on the basis that all four grandparents belong to the same population group. Ethical con- sent for the original study on drug response and further ethical approval for the extension to genome-wide genotyping were granted by two independent Institutional Review Boards at the National University Hospital (Singapore) and the National University of Singapore, respectively. The population label used in the study for this sample is INS.
