Population Description: The Khanty currently live in three regions, Khanty-Mansi, Ymal-Nenets, and northern Tomsk, which are located east of the Ural Mountains in the Russian Federation. They primarily live near the Ob and Irtush Rivers in those regions. The Khanty are divided into three sub-ethnic groups, north, east, and the south. The Khanty migrated into the area several thousand years ago as nomadic Hungarian tribes from West Siberia and North Kazachstan. They are semi-sedentary and subsist by hunting and fishing. Although they follow Russian orthodoxy religion they still maintain aspects of the old religion, such as shamanism.
