Sample Information:

Graph estimated heterozygosities for various sites

Sample Name: Masai

Sample UID: SA000854R

Sample Description:This sample consists of unrelated individuals belonging to the Masai tribe in East Africa. Groups of Masai live in Kenya and Tanzania. This particular sample of Masai was collected from the Ekenywa area, close to the Tanzanian-Kenyan border along the Arusha-Nairobi highway. Most of the nomadic pastoralists sampled lived in make-shift locations in the Ekenywa area from where they could move to Monduli, Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater when occasion demanded. The manyatta (village consisting of warriors, their mothers, sisters and uninitiated girl lovers) visited were Engurutoto, Olkokola and Lamanyatta. Sampling then moved on further west to Losikito. This sample was collected by S. Kajuna and S. Kungulilo.

Sample Name: Maasai (MKK)

Sample UID: SA003382Q

Sample Description:This sample consists of unrelated Maasai individuals from Kinyawa,Kenya. All of the samples are from individuals who identified themselves as having four Maasai grandparents.

Note: The allele frequencies linked to this sample were based on calculation from Hapmap project website.

Number of Chromosomes: 300

Graph estimated heterozygosities for various sites

Sample Name: Maasai

Sample UID: SA003178T

Sample Description:This sample consists of Masaai individuals. The study was carried out according to the Declaration of Helsinki (2000)of the World Medical Association. Informed consent was obtained from all individuals. Ethnicity was assigned based on the submission that parents and grandparents of the volunteers were of the same self-identified ethnic group. The DNA of these samples are stored in the AiBST Biobank of African Populations.

Number of Chromosomes: 26
