Sample Description: The Lao Long is the major ethnic group of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR). They are also known as Lao Lum or Lao Loum. They belong to the Tai-Kadai language family and are believed to have migrated from Southern China more than one thousand years ago. This sample was collected on November 8, 2005 by Dr. Hui Li and contains unrelated Lao Long people from all over the country. The transformed cell lines were established by Judith R. Kidd. More than half of this sample are from Sisattanak District, Capital Vientiane, Laos P.D.R. (Latitude: 17 degrees, 55 minutes 20 seconds North; Longitude: 102 degrees 39 minutes 21 seconds East). The number of individuals sampled from each locale include: Vientiane Capital (76), Vientiane Pr. (10), Savannaket Pr (7), Khammoun Pr. (5), Luang Prabang Pr. (4), Houanphan Pr (4), Champasset Pr. (3), Bolikhamxay Pr. (3), Phongsali Pr. (3), Xiangkhuang Pr. (2), Xaygnaboli Pr. (1) and Bokeo Pr. (1). Most of the individuals sampled were young people about 20 years of age. The Lao Long population (roughly 3,188,577 1991 UBS estimate) is believed to be a mixture of Tai-Kadai migrants and Austro-Asiatic natives.
