Sample Description: This sample consists unrelated individuals collected by Dr. Qasim Mehdi and colleagues in Pakistan. The Pathans inhabit the North West Frontier Province and Balochistan Province in Pakistan and parts of neighboring Afghanistan (Bellew 1998; Caroe 1958). They speak an Indo-European language, viz., Pushto (Grimes 1992). Legends claim that they are either the lost tribe of Israel or descendants of soldiers that came with Alexander the Great. This is not supported by current genetic data (Mansoor et al. 2004).
